Avijit holds a personal Chair in Cariology & Operative Dentistry / Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, as well as being Deputy Director of Education (Clinical Skills) & Programme Director of the new, innovative flexible-learning Masters in Advanced Minimum Intervention Dentistry at King’s College London Dental Institute @ Guy’s Hospital, London, UK.

Avijit is well-renowned internationally as a lecturer & researcher in the fields of Cariology, MI Dentistry and dental biomaterials, co-authoring Pickard’s Manual of Operative Dentistry – 9th edition (2011, OUP, UK), a definitive and internationally respected text in the field. As well as holding examinerships in Malta, Brunei, Kuwait, Oman and Sheffield and Newcastle in the UK, he manages to maintain a specialist practice in Prosthodontics & Periodontics and specialises in the oral/dental rehabilitation of head and neck oncology patients at the hospital. Avijit sits on the Editorial Board of Dental Update and the Health & Science Committee at the BDA.

Lecture Summary:

This brief presentation will outline some of the clinical and scientific evidence for the minimum intervention care framework managing patients with dental caries. This risk assessment-based, preventive rationale highlights the biological management of caries as opposed to the traditional mechanistic, surgical approach. The decision making process for operative intervention will be outlined along with prevention/control regimes to maintain a patient’s lifelong oral health.
